Personal Notes: I was born and raised at 69 Charter Avenue. Had a rather chequered primary school career: began at Downshall School but, after a year or so of erratic attendance, was deemed to be 'delicate' in health and transferred to Benton Road Open Air School where I settled happily until, going to school one morning, found half of it a heap of rubble following an air raid. After a few miserable months back at Downshall I returned to Benton Road. As I grew older and stronger Benton Road became unnecessary, so it was arranged for me to transfer William Torbitt. I recall being in the classes of Mrs Sneyd, Mr Osborne then Miss Davidson. I gained steadily in confidence in the School and was v. happy there, especially as some fellow-pupils were cubs with me in the 2nd Seven Kings Pack at St John's. Scholastically, I was near the bottom of the B Stream on arrival but was third in the top class when I left in the summer of 1947 to go on to Wanstead CHS. I affectionately recall Mr Train, and was to discover he trained at Culham Training College when I entered it in 1958 prior to a brief teaching career.
